Psylocke : Uncanny X-Force

Posted on May 15, 2012

Character: Betsy Braddock
Series: Uncanny X-Force
Source: Marvel
Completed: 2012

There’s this complicated relationship between Betsy and me, except it’s not really complicated and more like I’m just super exasperated by asian-as-a-character-trait. Especially when Betsy is super rad and super fab, and I really loved her all-English debut, and, frankly, I’m not really into her swimsuit ninja gear. Leave that to ladies with better thighs than mine ha.

But there is something I really love, and that’s the foray into Otherworld’s crazy Britannica via Uncanny X-Force. And while the idea of Betsy’s old Captain Britain costume makes me cry because DAT HAIR, the recent excursion means amazing purple wig aw yiss + let’s make a hilarious plastic psychic knife because why not that’s why.

Not gonna lie, it’s a thrill to cosplay Betsy. She’s a real classy dame.

Leah : Journey Into Mystery

Posted on May 15, 2012

Character: Leah, Handmaiden of Hela
Series: Journey Into Mystery
Source: Marvel
Completed: 2012

So, Kieron G. is totally just rockin’ this series right out of the water. And because my buddy Natalie and I were just frantically high fiving each other after every week Journey Into Mystery graced us with its precious pocket-sized Loki, we decided that we had to pair up into the greatest milkshake-fueled pair the world has ever known.

Spoiler: drinking milkshakes would kill us both. Ha ha!!

As with most of my super enthused endeavours, we decided to make these with very little time before the convention. You can tell. It’s sadly a little ill-fitting, and the lining isn’t as good as it should be. It’ll definitely need an overhaul before we bring the band back together again.

Oh my gosh, I love me some cosmic ladies. Especially the recent stuff with A&L up until they nuked Phyla you know what I’m talking about ha ha!! sorry gotta check those bitterness levels. Regardless, my overwhelming flaily feelings re: Captain M. lady legacies remains strong and true. Gotta catch them all, as the saying goes.

Ms Marvel : Dark Avengers

Character: Karla Sofen
Series: Dark Avengers

Completed: 2011

So I tend to make excited hand motions in regards to lady Marvel legacies, so after biting the bullet with Moonstone… well, here you go. Why the Karla vs Carol as choice of avatar? Is there an actual difference in their costumes? Maybe it’s just easier to party hard with your head in Karla’s game.

Not gonna lie, this was originally ganked from my Phyla-Vell costume, but my wig for Phyla never came in time. Ha.

Pictures coming soon.

USO Girl : Captain America

Character: USO Girl
Series: Captain America: The First Avenger
Source: Marvel
Completed: 2011

So because my friends and I have no concept of logic, we decided that HEY YEAH LET’S MAKE USO GIRL OUTFITS!! about two weeks before the convention or something like that. Nothing lights a fire under us like bald eagle- and freedom- flavoured movies I guess. Also because my friend Kevin makes a great Cap and I wanted to salute everybody who came near me.

Turns out, American salutes are different?? Who knew. Who knew.

Pictures coming soon.

Moonstone : Thunderbolts

Posted on May 14, 2012

Character: Karla Sofen
Series: Thunderbolts
Source: Marvel
Completed: 2011

So we’re totally talking Thunderbolts cosplay reunion, but bigger. And because we doubled up on Songbird the previous year and there was a significant lack of Moonstone antagonism, I decided that I could throw it to the winds and be a HBIC and wear white and basically be everything I’m not ha ha!! seriously I just don’t like meanie faces okay. Especially ones that get written all crazy and weird during Dark Reign.

Really, I just feel like I’m doing a disservice to Karla by being such a derpface. Oh well.

Viper : Captain America

Posted on Feb 7, 2011

Character: Ophelia Sarkissian
Series: Captain America, Secret Warriors
Source: Marvel
Completed: 2010

So, I really like the ol’ journey to Nippon/Madripoor that Marvel did back in the day, mostly for the likes of Wolverine and Daredevil — I got pretty caught up with the cast of Yukio, Mariko, Viper, Silver Samurai, THOSE GUYS. And then Secret Warriors happened, and it was, yeah okay, nice to see you again. So this happened. Though what I would like to see happen is somebody making Viper’s newfangled tentacle hat. It would contain beer and glory.

I still really like that issue where Viper poisons all the ladies and it was super hot, and Jubes was super cool. (“A beast has instincts. A man has honour. Which are you?” etc etc.) I’m all about the return to old school Wolverine like that. LOGAN’S RUN, rockin’ it.

Songbird : Thunderbolts

Posted on Feb 7, 2011

Character: Melissa Gold
Series: Thunderbolts
Source: Marvel
Completed: 2010

Oh God, where do I even start.

I freakin’ love Songbird. So much.

From her rise in the classic Thunderbolts, conflicted and vulnerable and street tough circus act haha!!, then a bulwark against the craziness with ol’ fashioned superheroics during Civil War and Dark Reign. She’s just this amazing, engaging character that does not let go. Songbird will not stand down. Songbird will not take your creepy assassino bs. Songbird may possibly taste of delicious strawberries.

Super heart-shaped thanks to the gents from the Superhero Costuming Forum for recruiting me within their ranks — group hijinks and JUSTICE LIKE LIGHTNING and, and, totally making my con one super duper crime-bustin’ time. You guys are tremendous. I can’t wait for the reunion.

Addendum.
When I made this costume I chose to do my hair a little “wispier” than the straight broomstick she was drawn with. However, months later, the artist started rendering Songbird’s hair in the same wispy fashion. In conclusion, ALRIGHT RETROACTIVE ACCURACY!! yeah that’s me punching the air. It’s the small victories in life.

I don’t know what possessed us, but it’s pretty awesome. We get to be creepy and blonde together, and practice speaking in synchro. We were missing one for these pictures, sadly, but she joined us for 2011. That’s Miss Kyle as the White Queen and Miss Bria as my seester. You can’t tell from the picture, but we are all highfiving each other inside our brains, pinkies up.

Cause that’s how we roll at Xavier’s. /m\

Victoria Hand : Avengers

Posted on Feb 7, 2011

Character: Victoria Hand
Series: Dark Avengers, Avengers

Completed: 2010

Man, the moment I saw that cover. It was a like a 3-way punch of awesome, full of sassy ladies and Steve Rogers’ angelic aura descending from on high. (Nevermind the actual issue being pretty meh.) And so I unsubtly strong-armed Bria and Kyle into wacky hijinks, and the rest is rum bucket fueled, Hydra party raiding history.

For the record, I love Victoria Hand. I love her as a reasonable, lender of credibility to Dark Reign, and I love her unsuperpowered no-nonsense approach. Which is, incidentally, what makes her screaming FML moments in New Avengers so freakin’ great.

I also love Maria Hill aaaahhhhh.

This costume is freakin’ hilarious. It’s a BCBG blazer, an Alexander McQueen pencil skirt, and a pair of Christian Louboutin pumps. Because that’s just the way Ms Hand rollllllls. Right out of bed.

I’M LORNA FROM SPAAAAACE.

So the lovely Bria and I decided to be crazy sisters and do that heart-shaped thing you do with your hands. This happened a lot and it was awesome, and really, I just wanted to combine magic and space into one big ball of who-knows. Unfortunately, we never really got super awesome pictures together that aren’t goofy heart-shaped things. Ah, well.

Pee ess, Lorna and Alex should stay in space and have space adventures forever to continuously wash that Chuck Austen out of my hair. This is a truth.

Nico Minoru : Runaways

Completed Ver.1: 2008
Completed Ver.2: 2009

The obligatory Runaways family portrait. Please notice my judicious application of 5-second photoshop to Xavin’s chin. Because ballpoint pens are both frightening and semi-permanent. :C

This all started some Dragon*Con ago when we decided we TOTALLY HAD TO FER SURE do this about two weeks before the con because we’re all a little intense about Runaways. And it happened, and it was glorious, and we got accosted by confusingly drunk Ex Machina groupies and it was all a very handsome time.

This group is ver. 2 now with more alien lightshow bugaloo.

I love these people. They are great people. I also love my hot hot lesbian alien girlfriends.

My tremendous heart-shaped thanks to Sarah for being the Stature to my Hawkeye II idk my bff superhero hijinks. Maybe one day, I will convince her to be the Stephanie Brown to my Cass Cain and we can fight crime together into the sunset~

I’m so, so sorry for how cheap this is. It was made on a whim and very little sleep. Aw yiss.

I love me some super-punching Atlantean powerhouses and their classy bunch of crime fighters! Thanks worth a BILLION DOLPHINS to Kyle Marie for accepting my last minute plea for a Venus. Goshhhh, if you have not read Agents of Atlas, this needs to change. It’s a pretty rockin’ time.

This was pieced together, like, one week before con. And look at that smile on my face. That’s how air-punchingly great I feel about Namora.
